[edit] Battery

Like any battery, the Porsche battery's life will come to an end and require replacement, often after around 5-7 years of service. When choosing a battery replacement some thought should be paid to your requirements - the original Porsche part requires topping up (with distilled water) from season to season where as most other batteries are sealed for life. After market batteries may also provide higher cold cranking amps (CCA) when starting the car - can be useful in very cold weather. The Amp Hour (Ah) rating relates to the run-down time for the battery - the longer the better - useful if you run in-car entertainment equipment with the engine off.

Several replacement options are available that fit perfectly. The most expensive is the OEM, while the Sears Diehard and the Optima batteries are popular. Unlike the others which are easy replacements, the Optima requires some work to adapt it to fit, but has its fans.

In Europe there is a different range of batteries available with the Bosch 'Silver' equivalent being the most widely available premium brand; as a comparison it offers an increase in CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) of 720 compared to the OEM Mol Kamina, which has 380A (Porsche part: 999.611.080.00), while retaining an 80Ah (Amp Hour) capacity.

[edit] Headlights

Two lighting systems exist for Boxsters: Conventional Halogen and the more expensive Litronics.

Halogen Bulbs

As with any vehicle, light bulbs burn out over time and must be replaced. Whenever a headlight bulb goes out, it is recommended that you replace both bulbs because (a) the other one is bound to go soon and (b) if you use a different bulb you'll have a balanced set. Conventional bulbs are size H7 for both the low and hi beam lights and can be purchased at any auto parts store. Drivers recommend PIAA and Silvania SilverStar bulbs as superior replacement headlight blubs (the latter being more widely available).

Removal of the headlight assembly is quite easy and covered in the manual. Instructions can also be found on Trygve's Headlamp Replacement page.

Converting Halogen to Litronics/Xenon

1. There is a method to upgrade conventional systems to Litronics. [please add text here]

2. There is also an aftermarket plug-n-play replacement available to convert from halogen to xenon bulbs by replacing the H7 bulbs with xenon bulbs that fit into the same headlight assembly (low beams only) for under $200:
