Plastic rear window care

From Boxster Tech

Jump to: navigation, search

The rear window of pre-2003 Boxsters is plastic and prone to scratching. Products such as Plexus (often found at marine supply stores or online) can be used to remove scratches in addition to keeping the window clean, clear and unclouded. To minimize scratching, you can help prevent them by cleaning the window exterior prior to lowering the top. To do this wipe the dust off with a wet paper towel or microfiber cloth. Pat dry (NOTE: it is very important to PAT if using paper towel) with a paper or cloth towel and proceed to lower the top.

Plexus can also be used on other plastic trim/accessories such as headlights/taillights and any other plastic pieces.

Some also recommend inserting a piece of cloth or even a pillow into the folded window before it is completely stored away to protect the plastic material from rubbing against itself. While any soft material can do the job, Porsche sells a felt cloth that covers the rear window called the Cabrio Rear Glass Protection (P/N 986 563 855 01) for around $20. Aftermarket solutions include Sports Car Solutions 986 Rear Window Protector and Mid America Autoworks' Rear Window Pillow (both links include photos). For longer-term storage, such as periods of time when the hard top is installed, this extra protection definitely makes a great deal of sense.
